Checking a Great Britain casino licence

A licence claim should be checked against the official public register. A familiar logo, pound symbol or British website address is not evidence that a business is authorised for the activity it offers.

The key points
  • Match the business and website
  • Check the relevant product
  • Understand the boundary

Match the business and website

Identify the legal operator in the footer or terms and compare it with the Gambling Commission record. Check the website domain, licence status and activities covered. A real licence number copied from another business does not establish that the website you are viewing belongs to that licensee.

Check the relevant product

Different permissions cover different activities. Do not assume that a permission relating to software, premises or another gambling product authorises an online casino. The exact relationship between legal business, trading name and domain matters more than a generic statement that a group is regulated.

Understand the boundary

UKGC gambling jurisdiction under the Gambling Act covers Great Britain. Northern Ireland has a separate position, although remote advertising rules and the National Lottery create specific UK-wide aspects. A licence is also not a promise of winnings, flawless service or protection equivalent to a bank deposit guarantee.

Read the register as a record, not a badge

A register search can show an operator history as well as current permissions. The existence of a result is therefore only the beginning of the check. Read its status and match the relevant business and domain. A trading name may be familiar while the legal entity is less familiar; preserve both in your notes. If a website link redirects to another domain, verify the destination rather than assuming the first domain licence follows it automatically. Likewise, a business advertising several products may have different arrangements for each. The goal is to establish the permission relevant to the service in front of you. If the relationship cannot be established, an attractive promotion is not a reason to overlook the gap.

  • Start from the official register rather than a screenshot of a licence certificate supplied in a promotional message.
  • Match the domain, legal operator and permitted activity, then check the current status rather than merely finding a name.
  • Treat authorisation and individual suitability as different questions; a licence does not establish an affordable amount to gamble.

A reproducible licence-check record

A useful record contains the exact website address checked, the legal business name, the register entry, the relevant activity and the date of the check. If the address changes during navigation, record that too. This allows another reader to repeat the check without relying on your memory of a badge. Avoid copying a licence number from a comparison table and stopping there; the relationship between that number and the actual domain is the point being investigated.

Also separate the question is this business authorised for this activity from the question is this promotion clearly explained. A verified licence does not answer the second question automatically. You still need the offer terms, balance treatment and complaint route. Conversely, clear-looking promotional terms do not establish authorisation. Treat these as two independent checks, each with its own evidence. Where the customer is in Northern Ireland, preserve that location explicitly because a GB register result does not erase the jurisdiction distinction explained by the Commission.

A copied badge scenario

A fictional website shows a UKGC badge but the linked register entry names a different domain. Stop the assessment there and verify the relationship through the official register. Do not treat the badge as resolving the mismatch or send funds to test whether withdrawals work.

Common questions

Does a foreign licence replace a UKGC licence for GB customers?

Do not assume so. Check the permissions required for offering the relevant gambling activity to consumers in Great Britain.

Does this guide recommend participating in a promotion?

No. The purpose is to explain terms and consumer questions. Declining an offer, stopping play or seeking support are valid outcomes of reading it.
