A worked cashback calculation with clear assumptions

A cashback calculation begins by defining eligible loss, then applying a rate and any ceiling. Without that base, a percentage such as five percent does not tell you the reward.

Choose a consistent ledger

For a simple teaching model, eligible loss equals eligible stakes minus eligible returns over the stated period, floored at zero. Real promotions may define the base differently. Bonus activity, refunds and transactions outside the window can change the calculation, so keep the model labelled as hypothetical.

Apply the cap after the rate

If the rule is five percent of eligible loss capped at £3, a £40 loss yields £2 and a £100 loss yields £3 rather than £5. Check whether minimum thresholds or rounding also apply. These details affect small rewards particularly strongly.

Keep the remaining loss in view

A rebate does not make the original exposure disappear. Subtract only money genuinely received as cash when describing recovery. Conditional credit is not already recovered cash. The calculation should make the unrecovered loss visible rather than highlighting the reward alone.

Check rounding and thresholds

Small rewards can be sensitive to rounding. A raw calculation of £0.375 might be rounded, truncated or carried forward depending on the stated rule. A minimum payment threshold can also mean no reward is credited in that period even though the raw percentage is positive. Do not assume a rounding convention or create extra play to cross the threshold. Ask for the rule and a calculation using the actual eligible ledger. If cashback is paid in points or bonus credit, the final conversion needs a separate explanation. A complete statement therefore shows the loss base, percentage, raw result, cap, rounding and payment form. Each step should be traceable rather than hidden behind a single promotional percentage.

If your result differs from the credited amount, request the eligible-loss statement before changing the arithmetic. A different transaction window or excluded entry may explain the gap without any error in multiplication.

  • Define eligible losses from the actual terms rather than using total deposits as a convenient substitute.
  • Apply any ceiling and minimum threshold in the stated order, noting how fractional pennies are handled.
  • Show whether the credited amount is cash or conditional credit before subtracting it from a reported cash loss.

Worked example · hypothetical

A capped rebate

Under the hypothetical five-percent, £3-cap model, an £80 eligible loss produces a raw rebate of £4 and a capped payment of £3. The remaining cash loss is £77 if the payment is cash. No further gambling is needed to understand that arithmetic.

Common questions

Can a winning period produce cashback in this model?

No. The simplified loss base is floored at zero. An actual promotion may use another definition, which must be read separately.

Are the figures an offer or a promise?

No. They are hypothetical teaching figures. They explain definitions and calculations without recommending an operator, a deposit, a game or a strategy.
